How to Fix Low Water Pressure in Your Home — Sunshine Coast Plumber's Guide

| Vivid Plumbing & Gas | Sunshine Coast

Low water pressure is one of the most frustrating plumbing problems a homeowner can deal with. A weak trickle from the shower, a tap that takes forever to fill a glass, or a washing machine that seems to run forever — it all points to the same problem. The good news? Many causes of low water pressure are easy to diagnose, and some you can fix yourself. Others need a licensed plumber.

Here's a straightforward guide from a local Sunshine Coast plumber on what causes low water pressure, what you can check yourself, and when it's time to call for help.

What Is Normal Water Pressure?

Water pressure is measured in kilopascals (kPa). In Queensland, your water supplier is required to deliver water at a minimum of 200 kPa at the property boundary — enough for a decent shower and normal appliance use. Most Sunshine Coast homes sit between 200–500 kPa.

If your pressure feels weak, the first question is whether it's affecting the whole house or just one tap or fixture. That single answer will point you in the right direction almost every time.

Is It Affecting the Whole House or Just One Spot?

Low pressure at just one tap or shower

If only one fixture is affected, the problem is almost always local to that fixture. Here's what to check:

Blocked aerator (tap filter) Most modern taps have a small mesh filter screwed onto the tip of the spout called an aerator. Mineral deposits, rust, and grit can clog it over time — especially on the Sunshine Coast where coastal water conditions can accelerate buildup. Unscrew the aerator by hand or with a cloth, rinse it under water, and screw it back on. This alone fixes weak pressure on a single tap more often than you'd think.

Blocked showerhead Same idea. Unscrew your showerhead and soak it in a bowl of white vinegar for a few hours to dissolve mineral deposits. Give it a good rinse and reattach. If the showerhead is old and badly blocked, it may be worth replacing it entirely.

Partially closed isolator valve Under every sink and behind every toilet there's a small tap called an isolator valve. If this has been accidentally knocked or partially closed during previous work, it will restrict flow to just that fixture. Make sure it's fully open (handle in line with the pipe).

Low pressure throughout the whole house

If every tap, shower, and appliance is running weak, the cause is further upstream. Here's where to look:

Check your main water meter valve Your water meter is usually at the front of your property near the footpath. There's a stop valve next to it. Make sure this is fully open. If it's been partially closed — perhaps after maintenance — your whole house will suffer low pressure. Turn it fully counterclockwise to open.

Check your main internal stop valve Most homes also have a second stop valve where the water line enters the house, often under the kitchen sink or in a meter box. Same check — make sure it's fully open.

Is your neighbour also affected? Ask next door. If they're experiencing the same issue, the problem is with Unitywater's supply — not your property. You can check Unitywater's outage page or call them directly. There may be work happening on the street, or a main has burst nearby.

Hot water only, or cold water only? If only your hot water pressure is weak, the issue is almost certainly your hot water system. A failing pressure relief valve, a build-up of sediment inside the tank, or a faulty tempering valve can all restrict hot water flow. This needs a licensed plumber.

Common Causes of Low Water Pressure on the Sunshine Coast

Living on the Sunshine Coast comes with specific plumbing challenges that homeowners in inland areas don't always deal with.

Mineral and calcium buildup in pipes The Sunshine Coast's water supply contains minerals that gradually build up inside older pipes, slowly narrowing the internal diameter and reducing flow over years. If your home is more than 20 years old and you've never had the pipes inspected, this could be the culprit.

Corroded or ageing pipes Older homes — particularly those built before the 1980s — may still have galvanised steel pipes. These corrode from the inside out over time, dramatically reducing flow and water quality. If you're seeing rust-coloured water alongside low pressure, this is a serious sign the pipes need replacing.

Pressure limiting valve (PLV) issues Many Queensland homes have a pressure limiting valve installed to protect appliances and fixtures from high pressure surges. Over time these valves can fail and actually restrict pressure rather than regulate it. A licensed plumber can test and replace a faulty PLV quickly.

Leaking pipes A leak in your supply line — even underground — can bleed off pressure before it reaches your fixtures. Signs of a hidden leak include an unexpectedly high water bill, wet patches in the yard with no obvious cause, or the sound of running water when everything is turned off. If you suspect a leak, turn off all taps and check if your water meter is still ticking. If it is, you have a leak.

What You Can Fix Yourself vs. What Needs a Plumber

DIY-friendly:

  • Cleaning a blocked aerator

  • Soaking a blocked showerhead in vinegar

  • Opening a partially closed isolator or stop valve

  • Reporting the issue to Unitywater if it's a supply problem

Call a licensed plumber:

  • Pressure limiting valve inspection or replacement

  • Hot water system issues

  • Suspected pipe leak (especially underground)

  • Corroded or ageing pipe replacement

  • Any work involving your water meter or main supply line

In Queensland, any work on water supply lines, hot water systems, or drainage must be carried out by a licensed plumber. It's not just the law — it protects your home and your insurance.
